Currently, there are abundant genetically modified foods on the market. Seeds of such products can be purchased in most gardens and can be less costly than traditional livestock varieties.
People often ask what is genetically modified food. In a nutshell, they are organisms whose genetic make-up has changed. As it has come to understand the process of combining various genes of different tissues, it is often called recombinant DNA technology. The resulting organism is known as genetic modification, genetic engineering or simply transgenic. The genome sequencing program is ongoing for hundreds of organizations creating detailed genetic maps to introduce new and more exciting agricultural products.
In agriculture, these genetically modified vegetables can result in insects or disease resistant plants, possibly producing larger or possibly more fruits. To date, there are more than 252 million acres, which are planned worldwide for transgenic crops including staples such as alfalfa, canola, corn, cotton, soybean (Ornl.gov, 2008). We are currently enforced in the rice reinforced with virus resistant sweet potatoes and iron and vitamins. From a future perspective, you can find a banana offering a human vaccine to prevent infections like hepatitis B. We saw breeding fish mature in only a fraction of our current time and eventually the flock of farmers' cows seems to be called frightening bovine spongiform encephalopathy and generally mad cow disease . Most fruit trees are designed to be produced several years ago than conventional ones.
Delaware State, a major agricultural country, provides pivot points in this study. When passing through the Delaware Agricultural Research Center in Georgetown, Delaware, maize cultivation fields with certain characteristics and all GMOs dominate. Typically, these products are generally not readily available, but are in the research phase. For my subject today, I selected Bt Corn (Sammons, 2005) as the theme of discussion. Bt corn has bacterial genes within its constituent that serve to produce insecticides in its own form. This organism provides great hope for reducing the amount of residual pesticide remaining in the environment.
Crops processed to resistant disease or pest resistance are frequently monitored by EPA and Bt maize is one of its crops. The Bt corn crop contains soil bacterial genes known as Bacillus thuringiensis. This bacterium generally produces spores with crystalline proteins. When this composition is eaten by insects such as European Corn Borer, bacteria begin to degrade and produce toxins called delta endotoxins. As a result of eating the product, the toxins will puncture the insect's intestines, which will degrade the digestive system and cause death within a few days.
As I mentioned the benefits associated with Bt corn, I now began to pay attention to the negative aspects of the product. Concerns have been expressed as to whether corn will affect local populations of butterflies. All honestly, butterfly larvae are particularly vulnerable to Bt maize toxins. Therefore, we must definitely wait for long-term effects.
The main complaint is based on the concept of not knowing enough about corn to regard it as harmless to humans. In fact, we can not know the long-term impact. Coincidentally, humanity has to take chances, GMO crops are opportunities to receive education alone. I think that it is very important to consider the merit that BT corn can bring to humankind. Every year, farmers lose a huge number of crops to common pests and they lose at the end of the growing season. Let's consider the amount of pesticide that is regularly applied to ordinary maize crops to protect insects. Would consumers prefer to eat regularly grown corn meals dipped in healthy GMO corn or irregular pesticide?
Our population continues to grow increasingly with years. At the same time, one acre of farmer's land is sold to developers, and we are building an apartment to accommodate these people. Handoff is required somewhere. It can not be maintained for hundreds of years. The farmers left by us must cultivate enough food to sell farms and compensate for those who moved. I need genetically modified foods that can donate twice the amount of conventional foods. Understand and support that the idea of genetically modified foods is being implemented to ensure that they are properly managed and to secure human safety factors.
Government administration will be inevitable and will be done. I think their main role in this process does not direct their own whims of whether it is correct, exactly beyond the safety aspects of GMO foods. They need to pass the labeling legislation informing consumers that they are going to purchase amended food. In this way individuals can accept food or go to other places such as organic farms. Traditional food should not be banned as never fears of many people occur.
