Risky young children have increased opportunities to develop developmental delay or cognitive or motor impairment due to low birth weight, premature infants, or serious medical complications. Researchers reveal three general children's conditions: genetic disorders, events occurring during pregnancy and childbirth, and environmental risk.
Genetic abnormality
More than 100 genetic disorders are associated with impaired developmental function and mental retardation. Mental retardation, Tay-Sachs (difficulty leading to early death), Turner syndrome (condition only occurring in women, absence of X chromosome, low height, possibly leading to mental retardation).
Children with these disorders need to pay attention immediately, but they account for less than 1% of the age group of disabled schools. Only one out of 16 babies born with disabilities can suffer from a genetic cause. One of the reasons a few children are born with genetic defects is that genetically defective fetuses usually cause spontaneous abortion. Most obstacles are caused by events occurring during pregnancy and childbirth.
Events during pregnancy and childbirth
The second broad category of conditions that compromise an infant is an event occurring in the uterus during pregnancy or during the childbirth process. Prenatal care alerts the mother to the potential risk of certain drugs and the risk of infection and disease. For example, measles and varicella in Germany can damage the fetus, but can be prepared with presently available vaccines. The most common maternal condition leading to fetal malformation is diabetes. Diabetes control can prevent the occurrence of many obstacles.
