Mitral regurgitation and aortic regurgitation are valvular heart diseases in which the mitral and aortic valves do not function efficiently and cause blood regurgitation. Common symptoms of both conditions include shortness of breath, fatigue, chest pain, cough and symptoms of right ventricle or left ventricular failure. Rheumatic heart disease is a common cause in developing countries, but mitral valve escape and aortic valve escape due to myxomatous degeneration are a common cause of these two conditions in developed countries. Coronary artery disease resulting in myocardial ischemia or myocardial infarction can also cause reflux of valvular disease.
These two conditions are distinct clinical entities with distinct clinical features, but the under mechanisms in both are the same. Since the principles of Ayurveda treatment of both conditions are the same, these two conditions are summarized in this article. The main stay of treatment of both conditions is surgery. Ayurvedic medicine can be given as an additional therapy to improve valve function, control symptoms, prevent or delay heart failure, and prevent other long-term complications. Medicine is given to strengthen the tendon attached to the valve in the chamber of the heart. These medicines help to effectively close the valve and reduce the degree of escape of the mitral and aortic valves.
Medicines such as Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Shrung-Bhasma, Maha-Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Arjunarishta, Punarnavadi-Qadha are used to treat heart failure. Acute respiratory failure due to valve regurgitation constitutes a medical emergency situation and requires treatment in an intensive care unit. Ayurvedic medicine can be administered to patients with mitral valve or aortic valve reflux that do not match surgery or to those who would like to try alternate medicine options before undergoing surgery. All patients suffering from these conditions should undergo periodic supervision and care of cardiologists.
