The number of Cushing's horses is more common in older horses, especially mammals, as our horses are enjoying a long lifespan and many are living well in old age. But, it can affect all breeds and age.
Cushing is caused by abnormalities in the pituitary gland located at the base of the brain. This creates an excessive amount of hormone called cortisone, the body's natural steroid hormone.
Signs of Cushing
· Elongated curly coat may not be shredded.
· Since the sweat glands are pressed on the part of the brain that causes seasonal hair loss, there are cases where the winter coat is raised early or shredded at an early stage
Increased risk of disc disease
· Excessive drinking and urination
· Increase appetite
· Increase in heart rate
· Waste muscle
· In mares, cycles may be abnormal
· Maa may not be able to imagine
· Laziness
·Weight loss
For affected horses some or all of the above symptoms will be displayed for a certain period of time.
Processing
In the brain, substances called dopamine are naturally produced and cause hormone overproduction. Another natural substance called Serotorum has the opposite effect and is produced in many cortisone.
Treatment consists of using a drug that mimics dopamine. The most commonly used is to use one of the most promising Trilostane's drugs to block pergolide or serotorum given in tablet form.
Your veterinarian will decide which treatment is best suited for your horse or pony. Both types of treatment bring the same results, keeping cortisone production under control.
Management
The increase in cortisone in the body is similar to the influence of stress, and it manages the state where it is necessary to lower the stress level as much as possible.
· Protect stringent routines
· Secure a comfortable quiet shelter for horses
· Avoid with aggressive horses
· Easily secure feed and water
· Clip and rug in winter
· Clean and minimize skin disorders
Keep the hoof in good condition
· Confirm the signs of disc disease
· Minimize contact with new horses
· Periodically vaccinate
· Check regularly by dentist
· Supplies only high-quality food that is easy to digest easily
Treatment and management are done throughout the lifetime because there is no cure for the condition. I have an old pony called Apple that is suffering in Cushing for many years, but I live in a grand old age of 35 years who can live a comfortable life for many years, so I know from my own experiences .
The most serious complication is laminoitis, which must be carefully controlled
