Gonorrhea is one of the most common diseases passed from one person to another during sexual activity. It is also known as applause.
Cause:
Neisseria gonorrhoeae is caused by the bacterium Neisseria which rapidly proliferates and doubles in the wet, warm areas of the body such as the cervix, urethra, mouth or rectum. Gonorrhea can be treated.
Symptom:
Early symptoms of gonorrhea are often mild. Symptoms of gonorrhea usually appear within 2 to 10 days after sexual contact with infected partners. A small number of people may infect several months without showing symptoms. Initial symptoms of this infection may be abdominal pain, fever, nausea and pain during sexual intercourse. It can not be caused by sharing a bathroom with a toilet.
The symptoms of men have yellow emptying from the penis, causing painful and frequent urination. A few percent of infected men have no symptoms. Infectious diseases may move to the prostate, seminal vesicles, epididymis and may cause pain and fever. Untreated, gonorrhea may lead to sterility.
Less than half of women with gonorrhea show some symptoms, or they have negligible mild symptoms. Early symptoms include excretion from the vagina, discomfort in the lower abdomen, irritation of the genitals, pain or burning during urination, and abnormal bleeding. A woman who has left these symptoms untreated may develop severe complications. Infection usually spreads in the uterus, oviduct, ovary, causing pelvic inflammation (PID).
In both males and females, if gonorrhea is left untreated, it spreads in the body and may affect joints and heart valves.
Complications:
In men, epididymal inflammation; prostate and urethral structures may be due to untreated Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
In women, the most common result of untreated gonorrhea is pelvic inflammatory disease, which is severe uterine infection leading to infertility.
